CalOPS Employee Resource Groups: Belonging, Equity & Community

Investing in Belonging at CalOPS

At California Online Public Schools (CalOPS), we believe that when staff feel supported, connected and empowered, the entire school community thrives. That’s why we’re proud to introduce Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)—an important step forward in strengthening belonging, professional growth and equity across our organization.

ERGs are more than just groups, they are spaces where employees can build community, amplify their voices and help shape a more inclusive and supportive workspace culture.

What Are Employee Resource Groups?

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are employee-led communities designed for staff with shared marginalized identities. These groups create space for connection, advocacy and support while promoting a culture of inclusion across CalOPS.

ERGs are rooted in the idea that everyone deserves to feel seen, heard and valued at work. By providing dedicated spaces for staff to come together, ERGs help foster belonging while addressing the unique challenges that can come with underrepresentation, systemic basis and isolation.

Why ERGs Matter

The impact of ERGs goes beyond the workplace—they directly contribute to a stronger, more connected school community.

Belonging & Connection

When staff feel a sense of belonging, they are better able to support students. ERGs create spaces where employees can connect over shared experiences and build meaningful relationships.

Professional Development

ERGs open doors to mentorship, leadership opportunities and skill-building—helping staff grow both personally and professionally.

Stronger School Culture

By amplifying diverse voices and encouraging collaboration, ERGs help shape a more inclusive and informed organizational culture.

Research continues to show that ERGs play a key role in improving employee engagement, retention and overall well-being. At CalOPS, they are also critical in supporting staff morale, combat burnout and ensuring that employees feel heard and supported by leadership.

Our Progress So Far

CalOPS has taken thoughtful steps to bring ERGs to life across our organization:

  • Since Fall 2025, ERGs have facilitated brave monthly spaces to build community as well as discuss topics impacting members within our district
  • In February and April, ERGs have led districtwide learning at various meetings in honor of Black History Month and Neurodiversity & Disability Month to educate staff about these histories and their impact today
  • Invited external leaders in these communities to share their learning and insight with our staff
  • Provided opportunities in January and April for champion members to support the mission and vision through “Champion Corner” sessions to deepen learning.

How to Start an ERG at CalOPS

Interested in starting an ERG? Here’s how staff can get involved:

  • Develop a clear purpose or “why” statement
  • Identify the community your group will serve
  • Connect with at least two other interested members
  • Gain approval from your supervisor
  • Partner with a leadership liaison from the Executive Leadership Team
  • Align your goals with the district’s equity plan
  • Review ERG guidelines and seek support when needed

Each ERG is supported by a Leadership Liaison—an Executive Leadership Team member who provides mentorship, advocacy and guidance to help groups grow and succeed.

Looking Ahead

As ERGs continue to evolve and grow, CalOPS is committed to supporting their continued growth and impact. These groups represent an important step in building a more inclusive, connected and empowered workplace.

At CalOPS, belonging isn’t just a value—it’s a commitment.
