10 Ways to Set Your Family Up for a Successful Online School Year

The start of a new school year is always filled with excitement, anticipation and a little bit of nervous energy. At California Online Public Schools (CalOPS), we understand the unique opportunities and challenges that come with online learning. Whether you’re a returning student or just starting your K-12 online school journey, now is the perfect time to prepare for a successful year ahead.

Here are 10 ways to set your family up for success this school year:

1. Log In Early and Explore the Student Portal

A few weeks before the first day of school, CalOPS students and their families receive an email with instructions to access the student portal. Be sure to log in early to familiarize yourself with the dashboard, tools, and ensure you have access to everything you need.

2. Complete the Online Orientation

Our online orientation is designed to help students and families understand how CalOPS works—from schedules to expectations. Orientation will be available to complete on the first day of school and sets the tone for a smooth start.

3. Set Clear Goals Together

Talk with your child about what they hope to achieve this school year both academically and personally. Write those goals down, place them somewhere visible in their learning space, and revisit them regularly to help them stay motivated.

4. Organize Materials & Tech Essentials

Make sure to gather any essential school supplies and equipment you may need to have a smooth first week back at school. Test your internet connection and log in to learning platforms ahead of the first day to troubleshoot any issues.

5. Connect With Your Homeroom Teacher

Building a strong relationship with your homeroom teacher is a great way to start the year. At CalOPS, your teacher will reach out to your family to schedule a welcome call. This is your chance to ask questions, introduce yourselves, and learn what to expect in the weeks ahead. It’s a great opportunity to start the school year feeling supported and connected.

6. Use a Family Calendar

Keep track of assignments, class times, and school events using a digital or paper calendar. This helps the whole family stay on the same page and supports time management skills.

7. Encourage Breaks and Movement

It’s important to step away from the screen! Schedule time for movement—like stretching, a short walk, or even dancing between lessons—to keep energy and focus levels up.

8. Promote Independent Learning

Empower your child to take ownership of their learning by encouraging them to ask questions, manage their assignments, and set reminders. These are lifelong skills that will benefit them well beyond the school year.

9. Prioritize Social Connection and Support

Social interaction is essential for your child’s growth and happiness. Encourage participation in local community groups, sports, or extracurricular activities to build friendships and stay engaged. CalOPS also offers a variety of online and in-person clubs or events to help students connect with peers. If your child needs additional support, CalOPS also provides social and emotional resources and can help connect them with the right tools and services.

10. Celebrate Progress and Reflect Often

Take time to acknowledge your child’s wins—big or small—and talk about what’s working or what could be improved. These regular check-ins help reinforce a positive learning experience.

Let’s Make This Year a Great One

With the right structure, support, and mindset, online school can be incredibly rewarding. At CalOPS, we’re committed to walking alongside you every step of the way. Here’s to a successful, enriching, and inspiring school year!
