What is IXL and i-Ready Diagnostic Testing?

At California Online Public Schools (CalOPS), assessments are one of the ways we understand how to best support each student’s learning. This page provides an overview of the diagnostic tools used at CalOPS and how they support student progress in Math and English Language Arts (ELA).

What is a Diagnostic Assessment?

Diagnostic assessments are not graded in the traditional sense. Instead, they are used to:

  • Identify skills a student has already mastered
  • Highlight areas where additional support may be needed
  • Provide a starting point for instruction and practice

Both i-Ready and IXL are adaptive and adjust based on student responses to ensure accurate and individualized results.

How Results Are Used

Supporting Student Learning

Diagnostic results help guide each student’s learning experience by:

  • Identifying appropriate skill levels
  • Providing targeted practice opportunities
  • Supporting steady academic growth over time

Students may see recommended lessons or skill practice based on their results.

Informing Instruction

Teachers and staff use diagnostic data to:

  • Monitor student progress throughout the school year
  • Adjust instruction and supports as needed
  • Ensure students are working toward grade-level expectations

Family Support & Expectations

Families play an important role in helping students complete diagnostic assessments.

To support your student:

  • Ensure they log in during their assigned testing windows
  • Encourage them to take their time and do their best
  • Provide a quiet, distraction-free environment if possible

These assessments are most helpful when they reflect your student’s independent work.

Why Participation Matters

Completing diagnostic assessments helps CalOPS provide instruction and support that aligns with each student’s needs. It also ensures that teachers have the information needed to monitor progress and provide appropriate guidance throughout the year.

Questions?

If you have any questions about i-Ready, IXL, or your student’s results, please contact your student’s homeroom teacher or reach out to the CalOPS support team for assistance.
